The eight teams that are participating in Alter Polis have eleven days to produce a scale model (or representation) that is to formally represent their proposal as a response to the assignment created by the critics. Each team, once the established work period is over, will explain their proposal in a public presentation. As part of this stage of the project an open work session is being prepared by the name of Conversations, in which the participating teams hold a conversation with a guest theoretician who will direct the conference two Wednsdays every month.

Alter Polis has brought together eight teams of young architects which have carried out different proposals regarding the relation between the city, Utopia and humanism. Architects, critics, researchers and collaborators comprise a work platform about the city as an entity which can be researched from a humanist point of view. Once the established period for the production and presentation of the eight proposals of the Utopia city is over, on December 4 at 6 p.m. will be held a meeting between the teams of architects, the critics and the project's curator in which experiences will be shared and the distinct proposals will be presented.

“What- or who- made gargantuan monsters come to our cities? Cities have turned into their natural habitat and also their main source of food; slowly, they advance and transform our environment as they devour it. It soon was clear that they were going to stay for a long time.

Félix Duque. The inhuman cliché of a Utopian, humanist city.
During the last century, a fascinating mass product emerged from the techno-political “factories” which industrial societies have become: “objective man”, homo humanus. In addition, during this first decade of the 21st century, the producer, the product and the consumer are one and the same, and coincide in the same place: the City (or better: Mépolis, the No-City). His aseptic cleanliness, neo-functional geometry, and global compartmentalization are the result of the “scientific instinct”, which started by creating the mirror-man: for, as opposed to a reflexive man, a scientist’s ideal would be to become the faithful reflection of all that exists, leaving out almost nothing. No one knows what something might be worth some day, so things must be stored: classified, registered, filed; in sum, everything must be measured according to the laws and conventions of the Market (the topos encouraging today’s Utopias).

José Vidal Saavedra presents an overview of various demolition systems as well as the techniques used currently which explore and develop ways of recovering built urban spaces saturated with architectural structures.
