Comunidades Inestables (Unstable Communities)
Art, social practices and collective learning

Comunidades Inestables is a public event at Intermediae, where, over three days, we will build a provisional space for action, reflection and exchange between agents and initiatives with a particular interest in the junction between artistic practice, social processes and collective learning. 

Comunidades Inestables is designed to have a mixed format and different types of activities will take place: workshops, outings, conversations and performances, to create a framework for contact between existing initiatives, interested artists and future communities seeking different modes of interaction. 

Comunidades Inestables does not anticipate who its target audience will be; rather, it calls for diverse practices where places are prompted to open up through art and culture, associationism and activism, practices that give form to new types of socialisation and sensitivity. 

Comunidades Inestables is conceived as an unrehearsed activity, where participants can speak from different perspectives.
This gathering seeks to take a practical approach, by creating a community in the here and now, and asking itself about the transience, precariousness, fragility and intensity that characterise many communities. By creating this setting, the project seeks to intensify experience exchanges beyond the dynamics of passive listening. 

Comunidades Inestables does not aim to produce a portfolio of possible methodologies or tools for a conflictive, hybrid, contentious or imperfect exchange; instead, it is offered as an interface to critically and collectively reflect on a type of collaborative, participative or contextual practice that is becoming increasingly influential in relation to institutional requirements. This growing exhibition requires us to work together to generate questions that arise repeatedly, in relation to the commencement, development and impact of these processes.

Home Economics, a crisisRus/laptopsRus project, revisits the floor plan of any given home to expand on the notion of home as micro-political space and a networked node. Taking up home management as a field of study to include the home-seeking refugees who struggle to make homes in new lands, the mobile generation who takes up domestic and networked spaces to consider collective living and the home-renewal movements that modify ways of production and consumption in our daily cycle and recycle.

International Meeting – Another Roadmap School
Another Roadmap

Public presentation Thursday 22nd at 5.30 pm

Intermediae hosts  the International Meeting of the network Another Roadmap for Arts Education, which will be develop during  5 working days and gather together approximately 20 working groups from America, Asia, Africa and Europe . The participants in the network collaborate to reflect and research on the histories, policies and possible alternative practices in arts education.This meeting will work on the research platform The Another Roadmap School , a learning  and exchange project focussing on education, cultural policies and  southern epistemologies  in arts education. The working meeting will be at Intermediae for four days. On Thursday 22 at 18.00 pm, a  public meeting  will take place with various panels in English or Spanish, in order to present part of the work of the groups invited specific practices as well as issues raised by research in the fields of culture, popular education or collaborative work.

Another Roadmap is an international network of research groups which was initiated by the Institute of Art Education (IAE) at Zürich University of the Arts (ZHDK). The joint research aims to critically analyse cultural policies concerning arts education such as the UNESCO Road Map for Arts Education (Lisbon, 2006) and the UNESCO Seoul Agenda (Seoul, 2010) in terms of their history and terminology, subtexts and paradigms as well as their application in each geopolitical context. The groups draw on critical studies and practices in arts education in each region in order to develop paradigms for their field of practice and research.

The Another Roadmap School aims to inspire and enable a process of learning and thinking across regional and disciplinary borders, actively involving researchers, educators, scholars, theoreticians, practitioners, artists and curators. It will offer a space for development, critical reflection and the dissemination of knowledge in arts education. It will work as a learning and exchange platform for transnational and trans-regional collaboration in the diverse fields of practice, comprising formal arts education, gallery education, art in social context, community arts and social justice work.
Whit learning units resulting from the school’s projects as well as a multivocal glossary of Arts Education, it will actively archive and disseminate outcomes of the knowledge produced both locally as well as internationally.

FROM UPHEAVAL TO PUBLIC ART
THE FAR WEST OF OPPORTUNITIES
Toxic Lesbian Opened Dialogues with Suzanne Lacy

Every political and social crisis force reappraisals of conditions of production, reevaluation of the nature of artistic work, and reconfiguration of the position of the artist in relation to economic, social and political institutions.
Suzanne Lacy was a product of these political upheavals: “In this moment in California we had the great workers strike, we had the anti war movement, he had black power, the free speech riots at Berkeley, the Black Panthers…”.

With all the reevaluation of the nature of artistic work, all the ideas that support it were put into question: the author, the work of art as object and the nature of the audience. The main idea was looking for an art that would be able to have a deep meaning in common people’s life, and of course, to obtain such utopia result one should investigate and experiment with new models, with expanded audiences, with dialogues, with collaboration and cooperation.

In a way all this conceptualization has to do with feminism, since feminism is an open front against fix structures of gender and social classes. Feminism has to do with equality and with bettering everybody’s common life. Feminism has always been concerned with equality in society for every body, as New Genre Public Art is also concerned.
The place and context for all this dramatic changes in the art scene was California. It was a virgin territory, the “Far West of Opportunities”, as Lacy puts it. It might be this the reason for the new common spirit of experimentation, collaboration, working together and starting processes that wanted to empowered people all around the world.

Women artists from ‘90s have developed new strategies to create and diffuse their artwork. Feminism and sexual orientation are two issues considered on their proposals. Ciberfeminism as social movement influences those artists to design their pieces in such a way the Internet is the main source of their inspiration.
Venus Matrix (VNS Matrix) is an Australian women artists group known from the beginning of ‘90s. They were one of the first using art pieces just created for the Internet and to be diffused by viral strategies. Many other artists have continued their way since then. VNS Matrix is an influence for Toxic Lesbian art work.

Donna Haraway is a well-known writer changing the traditional feminist considerations from a queer point of view, introducing the Cyborg concept. Gender defined, as a Cyborg metaphor will do a revolution in any trans-feminist women artist imagination.
Many women have continued the emancipatory way that twenty or even thirty years before, other women activists or women artist activists had started. Suzanne Lacy´s ideas about art and audiences, her definition of New Genre Public Art is part of the same theoretical and activist line. The XXI Century tools take into consideration the virtual representation space and that leads to a deep change, but this new way started many years ago.

IDYS tends to be a new space for training and self-training linked to collective construction processes.
It is articulated as a laboratory for testing and developing prototypes intending to promote processes of investigation and experimentation inked to citizen initiatives. The aim is to articulate a community which shares a collaborative learning environment.



TXP has been using the self-construction strategy in different contexts and formats. For its use in activation processes of unused urban plots and its community management, the restoring of empty buildings linked to processes of self-management, the collaborative construction of collective equipments, or the creation of mobile devices for public space user communities. Inside this processes we are interested in the dynamics generated from the multiple interactions between the different members of a team, promoting the collaborative learning, and sharing experiences and knowledge. Setting up a community that is co-responsible of the decisions, which creates consensus and appropriates the projects. At the same time, the citizen empowerment is reinforced,where the members of these processes increase their political power, gaining confidence on their proper capacities, designing their environment and building up alternatives.


This DIY/DIT (Do it Yourself / Do it Together) methodology of self-management and self-production allows to establish a tool for the creation of an open design city-model. It promotes the culture of open-source architecture where the produced prototypes are part of a collective framework under free licenses.
The objective for this prototypes is that they can be available for the community of users, in order to be able to be spread, replicated, evolved, implemented, improved and available for the different citizen initiatives.

These are the elements that we are pretending to integrate in IDYS, being in essence, a space for the investigation-participation-action.

Public Listenings of Radio Sures

Radio Sures

Radio Sures is a personalised internet radio offering monthly public listenings of narrated documentaries in the Terrario space. With guests invited from various fields, such as film, painting, photography and theatre, each meeting generates discussions in which the participants give their point of view on the chosen subject, creating
bridges between sound and other disciplines.
Radio Sures is a personalised internet radio of documentaries. With no photo extras, backing videos or multimedia bonuses, it is committed to telling stories exclusively with sound resources. An example of this aesthetic proposal is given each month with a public meeting devoted to listening, offering a selection of narrated sound documentaries, in Spanish and other languages, with projected translations. We listen in semidarkness,
sitting or lying down, as if in a cinema with a film without images. Orson Welles could have said it: "Compared to the cinema, radio has the advantage of having a larger screen."
Each session has guest speaker to give his/her point of view (and of listening) on the documentary heard. The guests are not specialists in sound or radio, but work in other creative fields: film, painting, photography, literature, theatre, etc. Rather than analysing, they share their feelings and impressions as listeners, and through their taking part we can build bridges between sound and other artistic disciplines.

Citykitchen

Citykitchen is a project being developed in Intermediæ that aims to generate a new way of building cities based on collaboration between people, businesses, public agencies and professionals from different fields.
Various types of citizen associations focus their work on regenerating neighbourhood spaces through artistic creation and cultural development. These citizen initiatives have generated an extensive panorama of excellent, disseminated practices. These are at times unrelated to each other and have not yet been crystallised in a common methodology capable of growing around collective knowledge and of interrelating all of these experiences through a shared goal.
Citykitchen is forging ahead with different processes for collating these experiences, such as the process instigated by Vivero de Iniciativas Ciudadanas (Citizen Initiative Nursery), in order to reflect on possible methodology tools for collective construction and clearly defined frameworks for dialogue between cultural,
social and administrative actors.
Through a series of seminars and public working meetings, it proposes that the current processes and mechanisms should be looked into. They seek to pinpoint the issues and barriers currently faced by citizen initiatives and to reflect on a possible protocol that facilitates their development and supports such citizenbased processes for managing public spaces.

Semilla Boombox

Semilla Association and Sergio Galán

Semilla Boombox is a project that explores the use of public spaces as places to meet and get along together in the company of music, based on the custom of many young people to get together to listen to the music they like. While in the 1980s Boomboxes or Ghettoblasters typically provided the "Sound System", today small mobile phones fulfil this function.
What would happen if a public space were fitted with a system to facilitate this practice?
Semilla Boombox is a collaborative sound system being developed by a group of young people from the Semilla Association in collaboration with the interactive designer and programmer, Sergio Galán.
It started to work as a prototype in May 2013, in the sports courts on Villalonso Street in the Villaverde district. Users of the park can connect to the device's wifi network from their mobile phone and enter a web page to find and select the music they want to be played over the loudspeakers. Each user can change the order of the songs by voting for the ones that the others have added.

The New Dahlia Garden

This project proposes the creation of a kitchen garden of ornamental plants and vegetables, to act as a trigger for community involvement and as a point of meeting and social cohesion for the city of Madrid.
An area of land in the Matadero complex, opposite the Arganzuela greenhouse, connected to Madrid Río Park and owned by the Municipal Arts, Sport and Tourism Department, will be prepared for the purpose.
It is proposed to design the land collaboratively, and for it to contain various growing plots under different forms of management: plots for adult and school education, collective gardening, assigned to specific associations, etc. Between the plots, the ground will be covered with resistant vegetation to serve as a recreational area and composting will be carried out on vegetable waste from the garden. A temporary building will be put up to provide information, in the form of an "Rural Environment Approach Space", which will present innovative and creative proposals for improving the urban environment.
There will also be a programme of activities (workshops, lectures and screenings) with the presence of various artists acting as facilitators for specific phases of the project (Espada y Monleón, Atelier d'Architecture Autogerée, Refarm the city, Future Farmers), which will included opening times for all entities and people interested to participate in the various facets of this new space.

A fair that brings together producers, service providers, ethical and solidarity finance tools, networks and various initiatives of inter-cooperation in the Social and Solidarity Economy.
