Tamaños de la utopía (The Sizes of Utopia)
Wednesday 3 September, 6.30 p.m.

Blog Alter Polis
Broadcast via streaming: alterpolis.intermediae.es

The talk titled Tamaños de la utopía is planned as a brain-storming session. Ideas or deeplycharged issues will serve as the stimuli for discussion or brainstorming, and will include: What is the opposite of Utopia: dystopia or the Flintstones? Is the purpose of Utopia to provide a channel for the emotions arising from injustice? What type of defeat does Utopian thought always involve? What does “Minimum Utopia” mean? Can current civilization survive without a Utopian outbreak? What diagnostic procedures are used to plan Utopias ofsustainability and ungrowth?

Alter Polis brings together eight teams of architects to work on a Utopian city from a humanist perspective. Each team has 11 working days ending with the public presentation of their proposal. As part of this production phase, an open work session will be offered, titled “Conversations”, for all interested persons, the teams participating in the project and a guest thinker who will lead the event.

Proposal by ESTUDIO FAM + Rennó + Puente
From 14 to 24 July, Tuesday 29 July 6 pm, presentation
Broadcast via streaming: alterpolis.intermediae.es

Far from an attempt to present a new Utopian city, the Vivero de iniciativas ciudadanas (Nursery for citizen initiatives) aims to work with reality as the basis for an everyday Utopia. That is because, for some time now, certain initiatives have existed that represent “another way of doing things”. Their social and relational foundation makes these initiatives potential seeds that are gathered in Vivero de iniciativas ciudadanas (Nursery for citizen initiatives) to show other ways of managing a city. This interdisciplinary team has created a platform that aims to shed light on these initiatives, giving them a voice and expanding their scope of influence. This proposal for a Utopian city is no new invention; instead, it is well-founded on relational models that have been in operation for some time.

Proposal by N+TRECE
From 30 June to 10 July, Friday 11 July 7 pm, presentation
Broadcast via streaming: alterpolis.intermediae.es

The team N+TRECE proposes to "utopisize" the antiutopian reality of the present day city, creating samples, as if culturing bacteria in a laboratory, in seven different locations throughout the city of Madrid assessed by experts in order to improve the city in the process.

The proceso de utopización is the proposal of N+TRECE as part of the Alter Polis project, in which seven more teams of architects are taking part. Notes by the N+TRECE team can be seen at the Alter Polis blog written in Spanish: intermediae.es/project/alter_polis

A sketch of the model scale can already be seen in the Intermediae building.

Series Avenida Paraíso I (Paradise Avenue I)

The Avenida Paraíso series starts off with the essential classic experimental film from the early 20th century, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City. It shows different approaches from cinema and video to the idea of a city seen from Utopian standpoints. With multiple views on urban space, architecture and the creative ways people take on, transform, explore and experiment with their surroundings, this series aims to make visible a heterogeneous imaginary conception that surrounds cities with its aspirations and attempts to materialize Utopian spaces as they have been imagined and dreamt. From the Utopian legacy of modernist projects in European and Latin American cities to the decline of social Utopias reflected in past echoes of the architecture and urban development of cities in Eastern Europe, delving into the dreams and creative process of the people who created the cities through architectonic design and urban planning, Avenida Paraíso places the viewer at the crossroads between Utopias, cities and architecture.

The Yes Men
, 2003 (U.S.A). Dan Olman, Sarah Price and Chris Smith. Running time 80'

The documentary The Yes Men reflects the travels of Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, members of a band of enlightened impostors who denounce abuses by globalized commerical policies, represented by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The adventure begins with the creation of a fake WTO Web site that imitates its aesthetics but mocks its neo-liberal discourse, taking it to radical extremes.
