Wednesday 16 July 2008, 18.30 p.m.

Broadcast via streaming: alterpolis.intermediae.es

The representation of Utopian space has been a task humans have paid special attention to over time. Whether envisioned as islands, cities or societies, a Utopian approach has served to represent our relationship with ourselves and others. This talk will address these matters from diverse perspectives including geographic thought, and the history of cartography and of literature.

Series …Como niños III (...Like Children III)
Curated by María Morata

The works included in this series reflect on the role of children in the world of adults and vice versa. Education, imitation, the relationship with one’s surroundings, the paradise of childhood, and interpersonal relations with educators and parents are some of the themes through which the attitudes, behaviour and reactions of adults and children are brought into question in the complex social, economic and cultural fabric.

This section of the series is dedicated to Guy Ben-Ner. The Israeli artist has found the perfect balance between the two apparently irreconcilable worlds of artistic creation and family life.

La Ciudad como Paisaje Conurbano (The City as a “Con-urban” Landscape)
Wednesday 2 July 2008, 18.30 p.m.
Broadcast via streaming: alterpolis.intermediae.es

All human constructions are considered to be landscapes: an urban landscape. Founding cities in a territory means building a landscape to be inhabited, in contrast to an agricultural one to raise crops, or a natural landscape to be contemplated and used for the resources we need, given that we are animals. The City as a “Con-urban” Landscape ( with “con” meaning acting jointly) involves investigating other possibilities for urban intervention; understanding the social and physical city as a complex living thing in a constant state of transformation, adaptation, revaluation and qualification; growing not only ex novo as a dissatisfied political and physical Utopia; and developing not only by expansion, losing strength and shape, but also in terms of mass, density, compactness, and renovation. To conceive of the city today as a forest (Malevich) that is porous (Benjamin), is to interpret it in a new way, such as Manhattan (Koolhas), a polyp that is coralline (Geddes) and fractal (Menger’s sponger)

6-13 July 2008

Spermöla reproduces the forum of used objects or spermüll held under official auspices in some European countries. City governments announce the dates on which the residents of each street may deposit the objects they no longer want or use in a specific location so that others can take them.
Spermöla aims to generate a useful platform or tool to prolong the useful lives of discarded objects and create a space for neighbours to meet based on the memory of those objects.

Pre-registration until 30 June via submission of personal data and a few lines explaining the reasons one wishes to take part in the workshop, which has space for 10 attendees. Basurama will select the participants and contact those registered as of 30 June.
