Instituyendo el futuro es un texto de Valeria Graziano ublicado en el número 66 de la revista Zehar editada por Arteleku. En este ensayo la autora reflexiona sobre diferentes cuestiones relativas al trabajo que viene desarrollando junto a Manuela Zechner en el proyecto Future Archive, iniciado en 2005. En este caso, Valeria Graziano articula un análisis sobre diferentes conceptos y categorías que emergieron como focos de atención dentro del vocabulario empleado en el proceso de trabajo desarrollado por Future Archive en Intermediae, tales como Institución, artistas, usuarios, participación y entretenimiento.

Procesos de archivo continúa su planteamiento sobre la construcción del archivo de Intermediae. En estos momentos la reflexión se centra en las posibles formas de acceso a los contenidos del archivo a través de dos interfaces: un Timeline y un Mapa relacional de contenidos. Ambas soluciones de visualización se cruzan para crear, en esta fase, un recorrido cronológico por la actividad desarrollada en Intermediae entre 2007 y 2009, así como una cartografía de las relaciones conceptuales que se establecen entre los diferentes proyectos dentro de cinco líneas de trabajo fundamentales: ayudas a la creación, utopía, permacultura, juego, archivo/memoria. Estas son algunas de las herramientas que está arrojando el trabajo en Procesos de archivo para visibilizar la ingeniería institucional, el paisaje de relaciones conceptuales, espaciales y temporales, además de los principios ideotemáticos rectores en la práctica institucional de Intermediae.

Archivist Sue Breakwell lead the sessions. In the first, Sue recounted her experiences of working in different archives, and narrated the history of archiving. And in the second we refined the mapping of the knowledge ecology of intermediae, to start restructuring the server and implementing an archival practice..........

¿Cómo será el futuro de la Institución Arte? ¿Que desear del futuro de las instituciones públicas? En respuesta a interrogantes como éstas se plantearon hipótesis durante la parada del proyecto Future Archive en Intermediae en junio y julio de 2009. El 17 y 18 de noviembre tendrán lugar en Intermediae dos sesiones de trabajo con Sue Breakell, archivista de la Tate. La propuesta de Breakell para dichas sesiones de reflexión plantea abordar la figura del archivo desde la perspectiva específica de la profesión del archivista, la teoría del archivo y las claves generales de la labor del archivista. Al respecto, y siguiendo sus investigaciones recientes, Sue Breakell ahondará en cuestiones relacionadas con el significado del archivo para sus usuarios y cómo la práctica archivística puede entender y enlazar con esos usos, comprensiones y conocimientos en el presente. En tal sentido se sitúa como foco esencial de la relación con el archivo al sujeto, el momento particular de su encuentro con el archivo y con el material archivado y las interpretaciones y amplificaciones del archivo a través de la figura y trato del usuario.

Curator, editor and librarian Miren Eraso, recent director of Arteleku lead the sessions. In the first, Miren made an interesting analogy between the problems for libraries in post-Franco Spain and contemporary archives, and in the second we refined the mapping of the knowldge ecology of intermediae.

Day 2: 10am - 3pm

We returned to the document map we began with Jorge, we transcribed all the categories.

Synthesized them, and began another iteration of the map, on another huge sheet of paper.

We tried to picture a possible archival structure for Intermediae. It was hard, it was very hard.

We realized we were tracing the labour of an institution, mapping the info-ecosystem. We first listed the categories of processes, and affinities of information that comprise intermediae. Then we plotted the current themes and projects, and tried to coreolate. We were stuck. We were circling around, and getting stuck again, it was frustrating.

However hard we tried, we could not map the processes of intermediae through the projects it produces.

And so we reversed the process and let the projects structure intermediae.

This was a profound realization. The frustration eased as we quickly restructured the map. An organization committed to process is immanent, the projects produce intermediae, and not the other way around. There is nothing (or not much) without the projects!

We decide to restructure the server datatbase categories...............and keep experimenting with a timeline as an interface.
